French roulette

The same wheel as European roulette with one rule that halves the price of the even-money bets.

All the theatre of roulette at the best price the game comes in.

How to play it well

The decisions that actually move the number, and the version of the game worth looking for.

  1. Play the even-money bets — red or black, odd or even, high or low. That is where la partage applies.
  2. Under la partage a zero costs you half your stake instead of all of it, which halves the house edge on those bets.
  3. En prison does something similar by holding your bet for one more spin. Either is worth seeking out.
  4. Inside bets on the same wheel are priced as normal, so the rule is not a reason to switch to numbers.
  5. Many lobbies list French tables that quietly run European rules. Check before you sit.

Same game, same stake: 74 hrs of play against 19 hrs. Worth two minutes checking which table you are on.

French roulette is the same single-zero wheel with one rule bolted on, and that rule halves the cost of playing it.

Under la partage, when the ball lands in zero, even-money bets — red or black, odd or even, high or low — lose only half the stake instead of all of it. That takes the house edge on those bets from 2.70% to 1.35%. The en prison variant does something similar by holding the bet for one more spin.

The rule only applies to the even-money bets. Straight numbers and the other inside bets still run at 2.70%. It is the cheapest table game after blackjack, and unlike blackjack it asks nothing of you.

Things worth knowing

  • La partage applying only to even-money bets, not the whole table
  • Tables advertised as French that run standard European rules
