Baccarat

Nothing to learn, nothing to get wrong, and one of the longest-running bankrolls in the building.

The pace, the ritual, and the fact that a first-time player is on exactly level terms with a regular.

How to play it well

The decisions that actually move the number, and the version of the game worth looking for.

  1. Bet banker. It wins slightly more often, and even after the 5% commission it is the better of the two.
  2. Player is a perfectly respectable second choice if you would rather not pay commission.
  3. Leave the tie bet alone. It pays 8:1 because it almost never lands.
  4. There are no decisions after the bet, so nothing you do between hands matters.
  5. Scorecards and pattern charts are part of the fun and change nothing. Treat them as decoration.

Same game, same stake: 59 hrs of play against 4 hr 21 min. Worth two minutes checking which table you are on.

Baccarat is the rare casino game where there is nothing to learn and nothing to get wrong. You pick banker or player, the cards are dealt to a fixed set of rules, and no decision you make changes anything.

Banker wins slightly more often than player, which is why the house takes a 5% commission on banker wins. Even after that commission, banker is the better bet: 1.06% against 1.24%. The difference is small but it is free, so there is no reason to take the worse one.

The tie bet is the trap. It pays 8:1 and looks generous next to the even money on the other two. Its house edge is 14.36% — thirteen times the banker bet. It exists on the table for one reason.

Things worth knowing

  • The tie bet at 14.36%
  • Pair side bets, around 11%
  • No-commission baccarat, which usually pays banker wins on a 6 at half odds and is worse, not better
