How to play it well

The decisions that actually move the number, and the version of the game worth looking for.

  1. Call far more often than feels right. Folding marginal hands is the most expensive habit in this game.
  2. Any pair, any ace, and most cards that connect with the flop are worth playing on.
  3. The dealer qualifies with a pair of fours, so weak dealer boards pay you on the ante even when you do not beat them.
  4. The AA side bet is a separate game with its own price. Play it for the jackpot, not for value.
  5. There is nobody to bluff. Every decision is you against a fixed set of rules.

Same game, same stake: 52 hrs of play against 19 hrs. Worth two minutes checking which table you are on.

Casino Hold'em takes the shape of Texas hold'em and removes the part that makes hold'em interesting: the other players. You play two cards and five community cards against the dealer alone, and the dealer needs a pair of fours or better to qualify.

Played well it costs about 2.16% of the ante, which is respectable for a table game — cheaper than Three Card Poker, more expensive than baccarat. The strategy is not trivial but the big money is in one decision: calling rather than folding far more often than instinct suggests. Folding marginal hands is the most common and most expensive mistake.

It is a genuine casino game, not a poker game. No amount of reading anyone works here.

Things worth knowing

  • The AA bonus side bet
  • Folding too many marginal hands, which is where the real cost is
