Pai Gow Poker

The slowest, most sociable way to spend an evening on a small stake. Two hands in five are a push.

Long sessions, constant conversation, and the pace to actually enjoy a drink between hands.

How to play it well

The decisions that actually move the number, and the version of the game worth looking for.

  1. Split seven cards into a five-card hand and a two-card hand. The five must outrank the two.
  2. Beat both dealer hands to win. Beat one and tie one and it is a push, which happens constantly.
  3. If you are unsure how to set a hand, ask for the house way. It is close to optimal and the dealer will do it for you.
  4. Banking the hand when offered improves your price, though it means covering the other players.
  5. The fortune and progressive side bets are the expensive part of the table. They are also where the big payouts live.

Same game, same stake: 59 hrs of play against 24 hrs. Worth two minutes checking which table you are on.

Pai Gow Poker is the slowest way to lose money in a casino, which — if you are playing for the evening rather than the jackpot — makes it one of the better ones.

Seven cards are split into a five-card hand and a two-card hand, both of which must beat the dealer's equivalents. Ties go to the dealer, and ties happen constantly. Something like 40% of hands are a push. You can sit for a long time on a small stake.

The house edge is about 2.84% of the original wager for a player who never banks, with 5% commission on wins. It is not a cheap game per hand, but the combination of pushes and the slow pace makes the hourly cost low.

Things worth knowing

  • Fortune and progressive side bets
  • Setting hands badly — use the house way if unsure, it is close to optimal
  • The 5% commission, which is easy to forget when counting winnings
